MD Students Successfully Defended Their Theses

Recently, Mr. Chorn Sophearum, Mr. Chamnan Anrith and Mr. Prem Satya successfully defended their thesis entitled “Retrospective study of epidemiology and clinical features in adult patients with acute pancreatitis admitted at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital”. The thesis was supervised by Dr. Leng Nara. The students passed with credit. The Thesis Examination Committee included Assistant Professor Duong Dararith, Dr. Bou Bonito and Dr. Pai Kosal, and was chaired by Professor Callum S. Durward.

The study confirmed that alcohol drinking, obesity and cigarette smoking are the most common risk factors for acute pancreatitis, and that epigastric pain sometimes radiating to the back, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms. Considerable increases in the serum levels of amylase and lipase are essential for the diagnosis.

On 7 September 2022, Mr. Pin Punleak, Mr. Long Seakvay and Mr. Horn Menghong successfully defended their thesis entitled “
Retrospective study of epidemiology and clinical management of acute bronchiolitis in children under two years of age at the National Pediatric Hospital”. The students also passed with credit. Their thesis was supervised by Assistant Professor Duch Moniboth and Dr. Kim Bunna. The Thesis Examination Committee, chaired by Professor Callum S. Durward, included Dr. Leak Ponleu, Dr. Noy Pisey and Dr. Prom Vireak.

The study confirmed that the highest prevalence of acute bronchiolitis is in infants less than 6 months of age, and that most children have cough, fever, difficulty in breathing, running nose, wheezing. 72% of cases were of moderate degree, while 19% were mild, and only 9% severe. 83% of children received antibiotics.

Face Painting Brings Smiles to UP Dental Students’ Faces!

UP year 2 dental students have been studying Head and Neck Anatomy this semester with Dr Cheang Pengleang, who has almost completed his Masters in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. To help learn the anatomy of the facial muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics and other structures, Dr Pengleang asked the students to paint these on the faces of their partners. The students enjoyed this hands-on activity very much, and most did a great job, amongst a lot of laughter. Body painting is used widely around the world to support anatomy learning these days, and it is good to see UP following this trend. Well done Dr Pengleang and your students!

Following a long break during Covid, UP dental students are now “back to prison!”

Every Tuesday about 15 year-5 students travel to one of the Phnom Penh prisons to provide emergency and basic dental care to hundreds of prisoners. UP has been involved in providing dental services in the prisons, alongside our NGO partner One-2-One Cambodia, for the past 8 years. Not only does the project provide a much-needed dental service for the prisoners, but it also provides our students with valuable clinical experience. At first, most students are afraid when they enter the prison for the first time, but they soon become used to it, and grow to enjoy their visits. They realize what an important service this is for those prisoners who are in pain, and unable to get any relief.

The students are supervised by Dr Limheng, our community dentistry fieldwork coordinator. One-2-One provides all the dental equipment, instruments and materials, and sends staff to oversee operations. They also obtain the necessary permissions from the Prison Department. UP makes a generous contribution each month to help the service to keep going. If any of our DDS graduates are interested in going to help supervise students in the prison on a weekly or monthly basis, please let us know.

The work is hot and at times challenging, but it does provide some rewards, as those who have been can attest to. Thank you students, Dr Limheng and One2One for keeping this important service going!

DOORS OPEN FOR INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES AGAIN

Senior UP dental students are very excited about once again being able to participate in international exchange programs this year with five top universities: Khon Kaen University (Thailand), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), UiTM (Malaysia), Universitas Indonesia and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (India).

In the past students have travelled to KKU, UiTM and UI, but this year we have added Chulalongkorn University and the Krishna Institute for the first time. Priority has been given to year 5 and 6 students this year, and for some it will be their first time aboard.

During the exchange students will be expected to take part in classes with the overseas students, and observe in the labs and clinics. On some exchanges there is also the opportunity for cultural and sight-seeing activities.

It is usually a very beneficial experience for those who participate. UP is the only dental school in Cambodia which provides such an extensive exchange program to many countries.

AHHA VISITS UP – PLEDGE TO CONTINUE COOPERATION

Last week UP was visited by 3 members of AHHA, the Australian Health Humaritarian Aid NGO. The group included Dr William Trinh (Chairman), Dr Michele Tjeuw (Head of Dental Section) and Mr Ted Mlynarz (Executive Member). They met with the President of UP, Professor Ian Findlay, and then later with the Dental Team to discuss future cooperation. Each recipient of an AHHA Community Service Award in 2021-2022 reported on their project, and these were very well received by our visitors.

They were also interested to hear about the activities of the UP Rotaract club – as Mr Ted is involved with Rotary in Sydney and future cooperation may be possible for the “Cyclo project” or the “food for homeless project”. AHHA will continue its support at UP in 4 main ways:

1. Will send a team of dentists in 2023 to work with our students treating special needs children in the UP Dental Hospital
2. Continue their support for a poor community near Phnom Penh which they have worked with for many years – by sending groups of adults and children to the UP dental hospital for basic dental treatment by our dental students. Previously they supported a denture project for this community, with our students providing 35 complete and partial dentures for those who were missing teeth.
3. Will provide grants for new and ongoing community dental projects by our dental students (last year 4 grants were awarded)
4. Will reinstate the exchange program for dental students who can undertake a 2-week study tour to Sydney, Australia. This project was delayed by Covid but may be able to commence again in 2023.

Two recent scientific publications from their Cambodian school project were shared, and they discussed the future plans for collaborative activities between Cambodia and Hiroshima, which will involve UP dental students and staff. They also highlighted their international 4-year dental program which Cambodian students from UHS have attended for the past few years.

In this program, students first undertake their Foundation Year at in Cambodia, before spending 4 years in Japan studying with other students from the region, then returning to Cambodia to complete years 6 and 7 of the Cambodian National Dental Curriculum.
