INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION GROUPS

The Foundation Year Programme at UP now prepares students to study abroad!

In 2024, Foundation Year Programmes in Health, IT, and English Business can be used as the first year of an degree from an international university. Students register with the International Foundation Group (IFG) in order to connect with partner universities to pursue their studies abroad.

Students who apply for the international stream at UP must pass all courses in the Foundation Year Programme and provide an IELTS certificate of an appropriate level for their fields of study (6.0-7 or greater for some programmes).

Please note that NEE is not mandatory for the international Foundation Year and IFG partner universities, but UP still recommends for students to sit the NEE if they want to pursue a Health Sciences major. This allows students to switch to a domestic programme at UP, if they want. Please click here to see more information about the Domestic Foundation Year at UP.

  • Financial evidence

Can I work in UK to earn money?

  • Yes. You can earn minimum $9-10 USD per hour for 20hrs per week = approx. $720-800 per month during term time and unlimited during vacation time. Many students can earn approx. $12,000 USD or more each year.

What happens if I fail UP exams or IELTS not high enough?

  • British and Australian degrees are amongst the World’s best. These International programs are therefore high quality and only for high achievers, not for everyone. UP strongly encourages only students with very good English and good grades to apply. UP or IFG cannot provide refunds to students who do not reach these standards.
  • Students can continue to study UP programs in Cambodia

What about accommodation in UK?

  • IFG will discuss your university options with you, help you get necessary documentation for university and visa together, manage your university applications, help with visas, provide advice on accommodation, costs, etc

What about medicine program?

  • UP’s Health Foundation Year program is designed for students wishing to progress into medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other life science fields, including Biomedical Science and Pharmacology at many universities. The program offers direct progression to 5-year medical degree programmes The University of Central Lancashire School of Medicine (UK) as well as to other life science-related degree courses at several UK universities. It also offers progression to the one-year Pre-Med programme at the University of Buckingham which offers a direct progression into Buckingham’s four-and-a-half-year medical degree programme.
  • Additionally, the Medical Foundation is recognised by 6 non-UK universities in Ireland, Cyprus, Bosnia, Malaysia and Grenada. In most cases IELTS 7.0 or greater is required.
  • Visa costs – approx. $610 for visa plus health surcharge (approx. $2000 total for 3 years) plus approx. $100 other costs = $2710
  • Medical universities also require interviews for medical degrees except SSST in Sarajevo.

Why do I need to do a Foundation Year? Why cant I just go there from my Cambodian school?

  • UK and Australian universities have very high entry standards and do not accept/recognise Cambodian qualifications. Students must do a Foundation Year – either in UK at approx. $40,000 ($20,000 tuition plus $20,000 living costs) or UP for $1500.

Is there an English language requirement to enter universities in UK and Australia?

  • Yes, it depends on the university and the course, but IELTS 5.5/6.0 minimum for Australia, and 6.0 in UK. Some universities require 6.5 or 7.0. 6.0 is minimum requirement for UK student visa. IFG will advise individual student requirements.

Do I have to pass the NEE in order to gain entry to medical programmes abroad?

  • No, but its highly recommended just in case you don’t pass UP Foundation Year exams. If you fail Foundation Year exams you need to have passed NEE exams to continue at UP.

Can I apply for the international programme and take the NEE later?

  • Yes but why would you? You would have already been accepted to UK university by the time the next NEE comes around.

Can my Foundation Year be retroactively certified so I can continue my studies abroad if I decide later?

  • Only 2024 FY have been certified so yes if students pass 2024 FY. No if they haven’t passed FY or have passed a previous years Foundation Year

Will I have an academic advisor/home family/support organisation while in the UK/Australia?

  • While you are in Cambodia, IFG can advise and answer questions about life in the UK or other destinations.
  • Once you arrive in UK/Australian universities are very good at student support and helping international students settle into their new home but IFG is also on hand to help. So most support would come from university but IFG will offer advice etc. Once at university, all questions about courses, accommodation etc are responsibility of the university.
  • If students under 18 they will need a guardian – IFG can recommend agencies to parents but not arrange.

How long will my certification/offer be valid for? Can I defer entry in order to organize travel and payment?

  • This would be upto UK/Australian university – most are very flexible but deferment cannot be guaranteed. New visas would also need to be applied for.

Other than tuition and living expenses, are there any other fees to be assessed after I join the international university's programme?

  • No. Once in UK/Australia, only you have costs are university tuition and living expenses.

Is it possible if I could not finish the program in the UK there and I want to continue at UP?

What happens if I don’t get a UK or Australian university offer?

  • If you meet all criteria, IFG guarantees that you will get an offer from a suitable UK or Australian university. If you meet all criteria and do not get an offer then UP and IFG will refund all their fees. So you shouldn’t have to pay anything (no visa fees as visa fees only start after you get university offer).

What does IFG do for its fee?

  • IFG will discuss what are the most suitable universities for you, help you with all documentation required for university admission, manage the university admission process with you, help you with all documentation required for university entry, student visa, liaise between you and university as required, advise on logistics e.g., accommodation, money matters, health etc. IFG also issues the IFG certificate which is recognised by the foreign universities.
