Highlight of English and Employability program in Discovery Festival 2022

As the top university in Cambodia UP keeps improving itself to bring students excellence and mastery in the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Midwifery, Science Technology, Science Research, as well as English.

The Faculty of English and Employability has recently launched a very new compelling Bachelor English Program, in addition to its recent success during the Discovery Festival 2022.

During the Discovery Festival the English Faculty used various contents ranging from grammar, vocabulary, critical thinking skills and riddles to create fun learning activities for students. We utilized content from the textbooks that we are currently using for our current UP students so that the participants could have the opportunity to learn more about our programs. Different types of games were introduced to the students in different kinds of intriguing platforms, be they wordwall, bamboozle and kahoot.

As we are all aware that our university has successfully integrated technology in the students’ academic journey here, the English faculty was proud to present a variety of online games and activities during the festival to ensure that the students get to experience a 21st century classroom that UP offers.

Of all the twenty different booths of a variety of faculties and other partners which were interestingly presented on the days of the event, the Faculty of English had the privilege to host more than 500 high school students which is roughly 25% of the total number of the visitors. A great success for the Faculty of English.

Genuinely happy and interested in the Bachelor of English, students posed a series of questions about the programs.

Our English team would like to stress on the fact that our Program of Bachelor in English is distinctively outstanding and different from other English Programs. The Program of Bachelor in English that UP offers does not solely focus on English fluency proficiency, yet we set our scopes on other essential aspects such as critical thinking and employability skills. Throughout the program and their journey here at UP, the students will be introduced to a number of activities, tasks or projects that assist them to be collaborative team players, effective communicators, ethical decision-makers, attentive organizers as well as inspiring leaders.

Lecturers play very important roles in shaping students and equipping them with certain sets of skills. The members of the Faculty of English are qualified, compassionate and hard-working individuals who have the potential to enthusiastically help shape students to become high-quality graduates who are ready to step into the job market world.

The Faculty of English were honored and elated to have participated in the discovery festival. Moving from now, we are prepared to welcome students and let them explore the 21st century classroom that all UP’s lecturers proudly offer. The Faculty of English would like to invite everyone to come to UP and learn more about our Bachelor of English Program.

UP Nursing Students demonstrated fundamental skills during UP’s Discovery Festival 2022

Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Associate Degree in Nursing students were introduced to basic fundamental nursing skills during UP’s Discovery Festival 2022.

These skills include providing intravenous fluid using an IV pump machine, monitoring vital signs, measuring Body Mass Index (BMI), performing intramuscular injections, and preparing vials for injection. High school students who participated in the festival had the opportunity to practice all these skills after being instructed by UP’s nursing students.

Faculty of Dentistry Shines at Discovery Festival

During the Festival the booth of the Faculty of Dentistry received about 1200 visitors pass by, and many interacted with the activities offered on site. The visitors learned about our dental programs from our UP dental student volunteers from the second, fifth and sixth years.

For those grade 12 students who showed interest in possibly studying dentistry, we took them on a tour of the dental hospital where they could see our UP students treating patients; we also took them to the simulation lab where they observed dental students working on their mannequins, making dental models, making dentures and so on. At the dentistry booth itself, we displayed a range of items made by some of the most talented dental students, including tooth drawings, tooth carvings, tooth paintings, and stages of denture preparation. More interestingly, some visitors to paint and colour a large tooth on paper.

Most popular however were the individualized painting of dental pendants – which were made by the dental students in dental stone using a mold. Over 1500 tooth pendants were prepared, some of them were very creative and stunningly beautiful. Some even carved their names and the names of their loved ones on the pendants which they hung around their necks. One lucky UP cat even received a pendant much to the delight of the students. Thanks for the hard work by the students in preparing for this very popular activity.

We believe that this year, Discovery Festival is the best ever, and we were pleased to be part of it. I am sure the dental exhibition will remain in the memories of many who visited it. Hopefully they have also become more aware about the importance of teeth and oral health. Some may even choose to study dentistry in the future.

Lastly, all visiting students received a “Free visit to the UP Dental Hospital” coupon, so we expect to see many of them again.

UP Dental Students Provides Dental Checkups for Cambodian Special Olympics Team

Assistant Prof Soeun Sopharith has been the Clinical Director of the Special Olympics Special Smile of the Cambodian Special Olympics organization, and he recently organized for 20 UP dental students to give free checkups and oral health education for about 100 members of the organization.

The students were able to tell each Special Olympics participant whether they had any dental problems and where they could obtain treatment. Some were referred to the UP Dental Hospital. This valuable service helps ensure that the oral health of these sports men and women is in optimal condition.

Episodes of toothache or dental infection can destroy chances of doing well in competitions, and all those going overseas to complete should not only be physically fit, but also dentally “fit”. Thanks to the UP volunteer students for spending their time to help these athletes year after year.
