Foundations of Adult Dysphagia Management launched at UP last Saturday

On 7th Oct 2023, UP in collaboration with NGO Speech and Swallowing Therapy Cambodia (SSTC), launched Cambodia’s first university-level certificate course in adult dysphagia. 15 trainees who are physicians, nurses, and physiotherapists working in public and private hospitals in Phnom Penh who were successfully selected for the program. This collaboration is generously supported via a grant from Rotary International.

This year-long part time course brings SSTC’s dysphagia training programs, which have been developed in Cambodia over many years, to an exciting new level. The content – including lectures, workshops, exams and substantial clinical competency modules – was created and will be delivered jointly by international and Cambodian clinicians. All materials are in English and Khmer and include newly created Cambodia-based learning materials, such as instructional clinical videos, filmed in real-life settings in hospitals in Phnom Penh. As well as providing theoretical and clinical training to the participants, SSTC and UP will provide support in designing and developing dysphagia services for the five hospitals and clinics that are sending trainees. The Rotary Grant allows the course to be offered to trainees for free, and supports international dysphagia specialists to supervise the trainees during their clinical training.

This program is recognized by the Cambodia Medical Council and the Cambodia Nursing Council. This course is designed to facilitate the clinicians who are working full-time at the hospitals and will engage them in synchronous and asynchronous classes using UP’s teaching and learning platform “UPOP”. The trainees have access to the University learning resources such as learning platforms, library, simulation, classrooms, and conference room.

UP Dental Assistant Course a Big Success

UP recently held the first dental assistant courses in Cambodia since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The two one-day courses were conducted by Ms Pekina Norodom, a registered dental hygienist from the United States.

The title of the course was Dental Assisting – A to Z and it was made up of lectures covering a wide range of topics – as well as some practical demonstrations. Students came from as far away as Siem Reap, including from some of the top clinics in Cambodia. UP’s own dental assistants also attended. Dr Bhavna (UP Business Development and education manager for dentistry), Ms Srey Mao (Head Dental Assistant) and Mr Mapha (Dental Lab assistant) all helped make the courses run very smoothly. The participants greatly appreciated the bag of dental “goodies” which Pekina had prepared for them.

Next year Pekina hopes to return to conduct a longer more comprehensive training for dental assistants. Thank you so much Pekina for sharing your time, knowledge and skills with the dental assistants of Cambodia.
