UP DENTAL STUDENTS READY TO FLY AFTER COVID

UP dental students were unable to go on any exchange programs for the 3 years of Covid. But now the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs has reopened, and students cannot wait to take part. Early in 2023 we send 2 students to the University of New England in the US and 3 to Japan under the Denriche exchange program.

We also had 9 UP dental students attending a Rotaract Convention in Australia and visiting the Melbourne Dental School.

During October and November 62 dental students will be visiting our partner dental schools around South East Asia. These include exchange programs to UiTM (Malaysia), Universitas Indonesia, Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and Khon Kaen University (Thailand).

By the time they graduate, most UP dental students will have had the opportunity to go on an international exchange program or attend an international dental conference. We are the only university in Cambodia which provides so many exchange opportunities for its students. And students generally learn a lot while having a wonderful time.

EMBRACING AI FOR THE FUTURE OF ASIAN HIGHER EDUCATION

On Thursday 31st August, The Faculty of English joined a webinar about “Adapting to the New Normal: How Will AI Affect the Future of Higher Education in Asia?”.

It has brought together experts to discover an in-depth view of AI’s transformative role in the academic world. As generative AI tools such as ChatGPT disrupt traditional teaching, learning and assessment methods, Asian universities face both challenges and opportunities. AI can powerfully enhance student interaction, personalize learning, modernize methodology, and narrow the skills gap with the workforce. Furthermore, it strengthens higher education’s collaboration with industry, fostering industry-focus life-long learning. While challenges are present, such as faculty training and privacy concerns, AI’s potential to rewire education in Asia is inevitable.

YEAR 3 DENTAL STUDENTS COMPLETE OSCE EXAM BEFORE TREATING PATIENTS

Year 3 students finished their semester with an OSCE exam with 10 stations. At each station they had to perform an exercise such as CPD, reading a radiograph, putting of rubber dam, mixing GIC, assembling and placing a matrix band, taking a radiograph, putting on and taking on PPE, showing scaling technique, cutting a cavity and demonstrating how to extract a tooth. The students were assessed at each station by staff or senior dental students who were trained how to score the students.

Most of the students passed with flying colours – a few need to repeat one or two stations before being allowed to start seeing ;real; patients. Thanks for the course leader, Dr Horn Rithvitou, and his team for organizing this exercise.
