Week #1 of the semester has finished and we are ready to welcome Week #2 and the remaining weeks.

UP DENTAL STUDENT RESEARCH A WORLD FIRST

Recently UP year 7 students Im Puthisa, Horm Sotheareak , and Heng Sopiseth defended their thesis entitled: “Effect of SDF on arresting caries between atypical and typical caries on primary school children: secondary data analysis”.

The supervisors were Dr Horn Rithvitou and Dr Bethy Turton. The work was a secondary analysis of data collected during the Silver Diamine Fluoride clinical trial and is the first in the world to investigate the effect of SDF on arresting dental caries in atypical carious lesions. Atypical carious lesions are those where the tooth has enamel hypoplasia or hypomineralization. Such teeth frequently are weaker and more susceptible to decay. The study found that SDF was indeed effective in arresting dental caries in such teeth. The thesis defence was attended by about 100 staff, students and family members. The examiners, Adj Prof. Chea Sin (Chair), Dr. Chhe Phearom, Dr. Tak Ranuch and Dr. Khom Pisal, awarded the thesis a pass with credit.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine if there is a difference the odds of caries arrest by presence of Atypical Carious Lesions (AL) among primary teeth.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a subgroup of children who participated in a clinical trial examining the efficiency of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) therapies. Participants two applications of silver fluoride therapy at baseline, and at 6m follow-up. Arrest of caries was defined as a lesion that was black in colour, had a hard texture or did not progress to a more severe ICDAS code. The EAPD index was used to identify teeth that had atypical lesions. Differences in the proportion of lesions that were arrested were examined using the chi-squared test. A two-level model was used to allow for the clustering effect of multiple lesions that might occur within one individual. The first level of the model included tooth surface variables and the second level included lesion level effects.

Result: 205 participants were included (48.3% female) and 156 (73.1%) were followed at 12m. The mean dmfs was 20.5 (SD14.7) and 78.5% of participants had one or more teeth with an atypical carious lesion. A significantly lower proportion of AL teeth were arrested than teeth with typical carious lesions (59.1% vs 79.0%; P-value = <0.001). There was no significant difference in caries arrest by the presence of AL once lesion size, tooth type, baseline plaque scores, and caries risk were taken into account (OR 0.80; 95% CI 0.49, 1.29). Larger lesion size, molar teeth, poor oral hygiene, and high caries risk were all associated with significantly lower odds of arrest (P-value <0.05).

Conclusion: Although the proportion of teeth with AL that arrested was lower than those teeth with typical lesions, the differences in the observed arrest rate for teeth with atypical carious lesions can be accounted for by the size of the lesion and the position of the tooth in the mouth.

UP EXCHANGE PROGRAM TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND (UNE) IN USA

Dental students Eang Sonita and Ros Manen recently spent a week at UNE following the resumption of our exchange program after COVID. There were accompanied by Deputy Dean of Dentistry Professor Anand Marya. During the visit, they spent time in many departments (including the SIM lab and clinic), attended lectures and seminars, and interacted with many of the staff and students. They also had a chance to visit some outreach sites where UNE dental students are sent to gain additional clinical experience. The UP team were also taken to visit some of the most beautiful parts of the region.

In addition, Professor Anand gave a lecture describing some of the challenging orthodontic cases he has treated in Cambodia, while Sonita and Manen spoke about the dental system, dental education, and the use of silver diamine fluoride in school programs.

Below are some of the comments from Sonita following her return to Cambodia:

“The talk was well received by the students and faculty. The faculty provided lunch for attendees. Many students, supervisors, Drs, tutors, the even the university President attended the presentation and posted a photo with us. They found our community outreach program interesting and asked many questions about education in Cambodia. After the presentation, some of them came to greet us and complimented us for the presentation we did.

The most memorable thing from our visit was our host, the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr Nici Kimmes. She was very well prepared for this program. After our flight from New York to Maine was cancelled, she booked us 2 rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn, making sure we were safe. After we arrived in Maine our luggage was delayed, so she brought us to Walmart where we bought some scrubs to wear so we wouldn’t miss the first day in clinic. She assigned one senior student for each session to assist us during the lecture/practicals, and made sure we had the instruments and materials needed for all the activities. We got to observe in the clinic many interesting cases, and the students were so nice. We also met a Cambodian dental assistant supervisor at the Oral Health Center. Her name is Tha and she has been working there for about 7 years already. Tha took us to dinner one night with another dental assistant who is also Cambodian.

One day Dr Nici took us to one of their externship sites at Waterville which is an hour drive from the city, where they provide dental services for low-income people. Dr Nici arranged lunches and dinner for us each day, and picked us up and dropped us off at the student dorm. The dorm we stayed at was nice and clean.

Overall we had a really great trip and felt very welcomed by the faculty and students. An appreciation post of our visit was posted on the UNE College of Dentistry Facebook page. This trip was a once in a lifetime experience which I will always remember. I hope other students will be able have this experience in the years ahead”.

The Visit of the Medical and Health Sciences Student Association, Universiti Putra Malaysia to the University of Puthisastra

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Prof Ian Findlay, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Puthisastra (UP), and Mr. LY Chanvatanak, Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Biotechnology, with faculty members, Science Research and Laboratory Sciences students gave a warm welcome to Dr. Shaharuddin Mohd Sham, Advisor of Medical and Health Sciences Student Association (MEHSSA), and students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

This visit is made for the following purposes:
1. Discussion on the possibility of cooperation between the MEHSSA, UPM, and UP.
2. Sharing knowledge and presentations on Science Research Program, Medical Laboratory Technology Program, and Medical and Health Sciences Student Association.
3. A visit to the UP Library, UP Laboratories, and UP Campus, which includes cultural sharing between Cambodia and Malaysia.

Through this visit, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Biotechnology believes that the relationship between the MEHSSA, UPM, and UP will become closer and lead to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities.

Field study to Rumah Atsiri House or essential oil factory, Indonesia

UP Pharmacy students and staff have visited the Rumah Atrsiri house, an Indonesian-Bulgarian Citronella Factory, full of essential oil plants and other greeneries, the aromatic garden and greenhouse distillation in Plumbon village, Tawangmangu, Indonesia. Rumah Atsiri House produced essential oils to cooperate with Bulgaria. This factory was completed in 1963 and was the first time that this factory worked alone to produce essential oils based on Citronella.

Recently, Atsiri house has a large collection of essential oil plants of more than 80 species including lavender, lemongrass, eucalyptus, rosemary, marigold and other essential plants. There are plants where one can smell the fragrance directly, and there are also those that need to be squeezed before the fragrance can be smelt. In addition, there are also plants whose aroma does not come from the leaves, but from the roots.

In addition to the essential botanical garden, there is a museum in the factory, the aromatic shop, the merchandise shop and Rumah Atsitri Resto. The aromatic shop provides wide selection of essential oils products while the merchandise shop provides some essential souvenirs of Rumha Atsiri, Rumah Atsiri Resto serves several menus of Rumah Atsiri cooked with ingredients that are freshly picked from the essential oil garden.

MD Scholarship Students Participated in a Community Trip to Siem Reap

On 15th July 2023, 18 MD scholarship students departed to Siem Reap for a Community Trip organized by UP Student Affairs. The UP students provided overall health check-ups for 70 local students of the Khmer-for-Khmer organization. The participants provided physical examinations to the children and delivered over-the-counter drugs such as anti-helminthics and multivitamins. Half of the students had mild malnutrition or skin diseases.

As a mission medical team leader, Mr. Bunheng Rothnakseth would like to express his appreciation to UP faculty supervisors and UP Students Services for this initiative. The trip was very helpful for the medical students to practice their knowledge and understand the problems of the children who are helped by the Khmer-for-Khmer organization.

This presentation was very informative and timely as AI and other useful apps can help teachers create adaptive learning experiences, offer immersive learning environments as well as boost learner’s engagement with gamification.

Head of Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery joins Atlantic Institute for Global Convening

From July 13rd to 18th, Ms. Sreypeov Tun joined the global convening at the Rhodes House, Oxford. It was a big gathering of multi-disciplinary professionals around 150 people who came together to bring their country’s challenges in terms of health issues, racism, economics, and environment. Above all, it was to bring equity to all aspects of these countries like Southeast Asia, South Africa, South America and the indigenous groups in North America, New Zealand, and Australia. It was a great opportunity to hear the unheard voices of many people including nurses because nurses are too busy with patients in the hospitals. It was also a huge opportunity for networking and collaborating in health projects in the region or across the region.

The global convening for Atlantic Institute is held every year during summer to provide tremendous support to the fellows to discuss their common interest to lead the project to help their own country.

Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity

Generative AI is testing the limits of what can be considered independent and honest academic work. And it’s only the beginning.

On the 27th of July, THE (Time Higher Education) conducted a webinar on technology on generative AI and its impact on the existing safeguards that can be set up to protect academic and research integrity, and how it will shape the future.

This webinar was graced with the presence of Dr. Daniel Wang Zhengkui from the Singapore Institute and Technology, Associate Professor Christine Slade from the University of Queensland, Dr. Benjamin Liu from the University of Auckland and Associate Professor Jenny Davis from the Australian National University.

These distinguished speakers pointed out the great opportunity offered by AI as well as the rising challenges of plagiarism cases.
Implementation of AI in education is suggested, yet critical thinking skills should also be taken into consideration, hence the information received from AI can be properly evaluated.

Particularly, the assessment design should be reexamined to reduce plagiarism attempts. For instance, AI can be positively used as a tool for problem-based learning. Furthermore, certain aspects of research – brainstorming and reviewing literature – can also be assisted by AI. However, institutions have to be aware and establish policies to cope with foreseeable issues like copyright of journal articles.

The English team have equipped themselves with knowledge from credible sources like this webinar and are confident to bring those ideas to their classes and into the next round of assessments. These inputs are believed to be important, not only for the English team but for UP and academics as a whole.

UP Badminton Club kicks off its first session

The first session of the UP Badminton Club began with engagement, enthusiasm, and friendship as the club members shared their love and passion for the sport. The player received basic guidance and rules from players who have more experience, fostering an environment of learning, growth, and releasing stress.

The first session of the badminton club proved to be a resounding success, bringing together individuals who share a common passion for the sport. It was a vibrant blend of friendly rivalry, skill development, and community building.

UP Badminton Club aims to gain more involvement from students who are from different faculties and different academic years in sports activities outside of the academic curriculum.

UP’s Third-Year Students of Medical Laboratory Technology Start Their Clerkship

Third-year students of Medical Laboratory Technology, the Laboratory Science Department, University of Puthisastra (UP) began their clerkship in the Medical Laboratory of Cho Ray Phnom Penh Hospital and N Health Cambodia of Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, which was led by staff of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Biotechnology, UP. The clerkship will last for one month which started from July 03 to July 28, 2023.

UP pharmacy students and Pharmacy staff have visited the KONIMEX Manufacturing in Yogyakata, Indonesia. KONIMEX receives ISO 9001:2015, ISO 22000:2018, ISO 13485:2016, Halal assurance system for Food, soft caps, extraction and traditional medicine and drugs, SNI for biscuit and also has GMP certificates. This manufacturing has more than 4000 employees. KONIMEX has produces many products such as pharmaceutical and traditional medicine Food and functional food, , Medical device and diagnostics.

This year, 2023, Konimex has been celebrating 56 years of their distribution both in Indonesia and abroad since 1967.

UP YEAR 6 DENTAL STUDENTS LEARN ROTARY ENDODONTICS

In recent decades dentists have moved away from using the conventional hand files for preparing root canals during endodontic treatment, to rotary instruments in a dental handpiece. Rotary instrumentation is usually a lot faster than the conventional methods, and UP feels that it is important that its students get some experience in Rotary Endodontics before they graduate. Last week Dr Chum Chenda, Head of Endodontics, assisted by Dr Leng Ravuth (lecturer in endodontics) and the four postgraduate endodontics students, ran a hands-on course for year 6 students on Rotary Endodontics, All students successfully completed the course using extracted teeth and our endodontic motors from Dentsply Sirona, and can now offer this treatment to their patients in the dental hospital. In addition, the four endodontic postgraduate students are now teaching part-time in the undergraduate clinic – which is greatly appreciated by our students. UP hopes it can continue to find ways to help our students become highly competent and ethical dentists.

The Faculty of Medicine in Cooperation with KidsCareEveryhere Organized DynaMed Training at the University of Puthisastra

Dr. Ronald Diekerman, Founder and Executive Director of KidsCareEverywhere, and his team provided a two-day training about the use of the evidence-based software DynaMed to over 300 UP students.

Prof. Sandro Vento introduced the first training session by thanking Dr. Diekerman for generously offering this very important opportunity to our students.

KidsCareEverywhere is a non-profit organization based in the United States that has provided such training in more than 24 countries to over 10,000 physicians and medical students.

DynaMed can be used both on laptops and smartphones; it contains over 11,200 clinical topics, 14,000 drugs, 22,000 guidelines and 650 calculators.

The training had two parts: training of the trainers – DynaMed Champions, for 11 MD students, and Dynamed Training for over 300 UP students. Each session took one hour and there were many sessions at different times for students to attend. KidsCareEverywhere gifted UP institutional access for all students free of charge.
We strongly hope that UP students will use DynaMed to increase their knowledge and apply it in their hospital training/practice.

UP and Hillside Collegiate International School strengthen Education Partnership with MOU Signing

The University of Puthisastra (UP) and Hillside Collegiate International School (HCIS) have solidified their commitment to educational collaboration and academic excellence through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership represents a significant step forward in fostering educational opportunities for students and advancing research collaborations between the two institutions.

Through this collaboration, students each institution will gain access to various educational resources and experiences. The cases in the competition were about ambulance transportation, nursing care, clinical care, first aid, and included chemical burns, clavicle fractures, leg strain and others.

UP SELECTS STUDENTS FOR ITS NEW MASTERS DEGREE IN ORTHODONTICS

Last week 15 candidates for the Master of Orthodontics program, which has been approved by the Ministry of Health, undertook entrance exams and interviews with a panel of 6 interviewers. 5 were chosen to enter the course: Drs Set Mana, Nam Chamnan, Or Sokty, Nop Chan Pheakhdey, and Kaing Koung. Their inclusion has yet to be confirmed by the MOH. The competition for entry was very intense. Some spoke of having to wait for 5 years or more for the chance to enter this program. Course Director, Prof Anand Marya, said that he expects the course to be the best ever offered in Cambodia, as we have recruited many of Cambodia’s top orthodontists as well as several international orthodontists to help teach. Each student must treat at least 30 orthodontic patients over the three years – including both adults and children. The normal price for braces is between $1000 and $2000 – however, patients treated in the course will only pay $500. Renovated Botanical Garden

Pharmacy staff and students have been working extensively to transform our space into a beautiful botanical garden that showcases a wide array of plant species that have been collected from many places around the country. It has been used for both academic and research. Right now, it much improved than before, therefore students and visitors can meander through vibrant flower beds and pause at picturesque flower features. The renovated botanical garden is a haven for nature lovers, providing an immersive experience that is both educational and awe-inspiring.

UP APPOINTS DR CHOUN LINA AND DR TAK RANUCH TO LEAD NEW IMPLANT COURSE

UP is recruiting dentists for the new international course in implantology which it is running in collaboration with City of London Dental School (CoLDS) and OCTACADEMY.

During this course patients will be able to get FREE high quality French (InKone) implants from dentists in the course. Recently the Faculty of Dentistry appointed UP graduate and lecturer Dr Choun Lina to be the course clinical coordinator. He will examine and make a provisional treatment plan for every patient – and ensure that any needed basic treatment is completed before the implants are placed. In addition, UP has appointed Dr Tak Ranuch, who is a specialist in periodontics and implantology, as course Director. He will confirm each treatment plan and advise on any advanced treatment that might be required. Rebekah

Rebekah holds a Bachelor of Education in English from the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL, RUPP), a Bachelor of International Relations from the University of Cambodia (UC), and a Master of International Education and Development from Sussex University in the United Kingdom.

Before joining the University of Puthisastra, Rebekah spent four years working in International Schools as a teacher, academic class supervisor, and assistant school director. She has experience in policy and curriculum development at the secondary school level and has volunteered at AIESEC Cambodia in business development, EMA-Cambodia as a project coordinator, and CAMTESOL as a presenter.

She is passionate about assisting students at all levels to achieve their academic goals and creating a safe learning environment where students can make mistakes, learn from their mistakes, and strive for excellence.

Rebekah looks forward to collaborating with the English faculty and other relevant departments to achieve the university’s vision and missions and bring about student success.

Sopheak Sek

Sopheak Sek holds a bachelor’s degree in Education and Psychology, and a master’s degree from Asia Pacific International University, Thailand.

Before joining the University of Puthisastra, he taught English as a foreign language at the Language Institute of Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, Thailand. He taught general English to university students in Fundamental English 1, English for Communication, English at Work, English for Specific Purposes, as well as Khmer language to different learners. Sopheak has got experience being the course coordinator for Fundamental English 1 which allowed him to develop his management skills. He prepared the course syllabus, prepared test specifications, and assigned teachers to teach, as well as prepared for the final examination. He collaborated well with the teachers and assisted them as needed. He worked with foreign teachers from various countries such as America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Thailand. He has a clear understanding of how to work in a cross-cultural organization.

Sopheak is passionate about language teaching with a background in ESL. He has different ways to engage learners with their individual learning styles. One of the ways he differentiates learning is to incorporate online games in the lessons, which activates learners’ participation. He tries to apply different methods to stimulate learners to actively apply the language into real-world experiences, which help them to acquire the language better.

Soroth

Soroth, who holds a Bachelor of Education in English degree from the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL, RUPP) and a Certificate in Professional Development in the field of leadership administration from The Council On International Educational Exchange (CIEE) in the United States, brings a wealth of experience to the University of Puthisastra.

With approximately ten years of experience in various Independent Schools, Soroth has served as an English Teacher, Level Moderator, Mentor, Supervisor, School Vice-Principal, and School Principal. Additionally, Soroth has actively contributed to the field through volunteering at CAMTESOL as a presenter and facilitator, as well as at the Youth Resource Development Program (YRDP) in the Young Leaders for Social Accountability Project (YLSA Project).

Soroth’s passion lies in scaffolding student learning as a means of assisting students in achieving their full potential, helping students to set and attain their academic goals, and in fostering a secure and nurturing learning environment for all students. This type of environment encourages students to express themselves freely and without fear, while also preparing them to face new challenges and not shy away from opportunities for excellence.

Soroth anticipates working with the English faculty and other university colleagues to fulfill the university’s shared vision and missions while demonstrating to students the importance of intellectual collaboration.

UP Pharmacy staff and 5 students have visited the Herbarium Tawangmanguensis in Indonesia

Herbarium Tawangmanguensis is the only herbarium of medicinal plants in Indonesia. They collect thousands of species of medicinal plants and are still ethnically recognized. Herbarium Tawangmanguensis is a special herbarium for the collection of medicinal plant specimens, especially the specimen collection from RISTOJA (Medicinal Plants and Herbal Research). They also have Hortus Medicus, which is a garden of medicinal plants. Different from medical clinics in general, the Hortus Medicus clinic is a clinic that uses medicinal plants and herbs to prescribe medicine for their patients. Through a research process and scientific evidence related to the safety and efficacy of medicinal plants, they are then applied to humans/people as clinical trials. There are several services at Hortus Medicus Clinic including Traditional and Non-traditional health, Wellness package, Education and training about herbarium, acupuncture, and physiotherapy. They also have a Laboratory for the assessment of human health, and healthy food for improving health and well-being (immune booster and detoxify the body). They provide a one-day healing package with various activities that are healthy for the soul and the body including medical check-up, herbal learning, healthy food learning, aromatic garden therapy and project class for the patients.

The Faculty of ICT and Sala Digital Cambodia had a fruitful discussion regarding the partnership between UP and Sala Digital Cambodia to improve how the students choose their major for their higher education and how is UP is the right one for them!

The University of Puthisastra and the Binance Academy officially signed MOU to strengthen the partnership and the collaboration which can be beneficial for the students to gain new knowledge, skills and experiences regarding the faculty of ICT!

Faculty of Pharmacy’s international membership

The Faculty of Pharmacy is one of leading schools of pharmacy in Cambodia established in 2011. It is recognized by the Royal Government of Cambodia and accredited by the Accreditation Committee of Cambodia (ACC). It is located in a vibrant area of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

Three programs are running under the faculty: Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences (M.Pharm.), Master of Medical Biology (MMB) and Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.).

The Faculty of Pharmacy is also a CPD provider recognized by the Pharmacist Council of Cambodia (PCC) in 2020.

There are 10 departments/sections under the faculty: Academic office, Office of Rotation and partnership, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Medical Biology, Department of Pharmacology, Department of Toxicology, Simulation Pharmacy, and UP Pharmacy.

By 2023, the Faculty of Pharmacy has 23 full-time academic staff and 84 part-time lecturers (62 national lecturers and 22 international lecturers). Currently, it has 700 students and receives 170 intake students each year. The Faculty of Pharmacy has produced 7 batches of students equal to 637 graduates. Currently, they are working in both public and private sectors in government, ministry of health, community, hospital, industry, company, laboratory, educational institution and NGOs.

The Faculty of Pharmacy is known as the fastest growing school of pharmacy in the country. Currently, the Faculty of Pharmacy is in the FIP world list of Pharmacy Schools, Asian Association of Schools of pharmacy (AASP), ASEAN Association of Schools of Medical Technology (AASMT), World Union for Herbal Drug Discovery and ASEAN PharmNET in Education and Research.

Rice paddy herb anti-inflammatory cream

ម្អម-Ma’orm is a natural anti-inflammatory cream which is made from Rice paddy herb. This plant is used as a traditional medicine as well as an ingredient in a variety of dishes in Cambodia.

Moreover, this plant contains a lot of compounds, such as flavonoids and several vitamins. ម្អម-Ma’orm is beneficial for skin inflammation, reddening, itching, and burning. This product was made by year 2 pharmacy students for the Natural Product Contest 2023 and is now available at UP pharmacy.
