Medical Laboratory and Assessor Competency Training organized by the General Department of Accreditation of Cambodia (GDAC) in collaboration with PTB Expert Mr. Hanspeter Ischi

Dr. Thet Sopheak, Deputy Dean of Research, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Puthisastra, actively participated in the ISO 15189:2022 Medical Laboratory and Assessor Competency Training organized by the General Department of Accreditation of Cambodia (GDAC) in collaboration with PTB Expert Mr. Hanspeter Ischi.

The five-day training, held from 2–6 February 2026, focused on the application of ISO 15189:2022, “Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence.” The program took place at Sunway Hotel, with the final examination for assessor candidates conducted at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI).

Dr. Thet Sopheak’s participation reflects the University of Puthisastra’s strong commitment to fostering a culture of quality, accreditation readiness, and evidence-based laboratory practice in Cambodia, particularly within medical and pharmaceutical laboratory sciences.

The training comprehensively covered the key components of the ISO 15189:2022 standard, combining expert-led lectures, practical examples, and interactive group work to strengthen participants’ understanding and real-world application.

Training Highlights:

Day 1 focused on building a strong foundation for laboratory quality and assessment, including:

  • Introduction to the ISO 15189:2022 standard
  • Process management: concepts, group work, and group presentations
  • Risk management: principles, group work, and presentations

Day 2 emphasized resource management and external service control, covering:

  • Resource requirements in medical laboratories
  • Equipment calibration
  • Management of reagents and consumables
  • Service agreements and control of externally provided products and services
  • Group work on resource requirements

Day 3 addressed the technical processes of laboratory testing, including:

  • Pre-examination processes (patient information, test requests, sample collection, transport, and handling)
  • Examination processes, including validation, verification, and measurement uncertainty
  • Biological reference intervals and ensuring validity of results
  • Post-examination processes such as result reporting and sample handling
  • Group work on measurement uncertainty

Day 4 focused on management system requirements and continual improvement, including:

  • Nonconforming work, complaints handling, and emergency preparedness
  • Management system requirements related to competence, documentation, and leadership commitment
  • Control of documents and records
  • Continual improvement, feedback mechanisms, and risk management
  • Internal audits, performance indicators, corrective actions, and management review

Day 5 concluded with a final examination for participants seeking to become ISO 15189 assessors, conducted at MISTI.

Through this training, Dr. Thet Sopheak further strengthened expertise in laboratory quality management systems, accreditation processes, and assessor competency, contributing to the advancement of quality assurance and international standards implementation within the University of Puthisastra and Cambodia’s laboratory sector.
